Katie Ledecky

Bethesda, Md. > Swimming

Katie, a freshman at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart who swims for the Curl-Burke Swim club, broke national records for 13- to 14-year-old girls in the 500- (4:35.14) and 1,000-yard free-style (9:29.81) at the National Age Group Team Challenge. In her first varsity meet two days later, she won the 200-yard free in an automatic high school All-America time of 1:49.67 to set a pool and team record. Katie has qualified for the 2012 Olympic trials in the 100-, 200- , 400- and 800-meter free.

D.J. Foster

Scottsdale, Ariz. > Football

D.J., a 6-foot, 185-pound senior running back at Saguaro High, is second in the nation in touchdowns this season (57 through Sunday) and hold the Arizona career touchdown record (97). He scored twice in a 56-28 win over Queen Creek to break the state single- season mark (previously 51 TDs). A week earlier he scored an 11-man state record 10 TDs and ran for a record 508 yards on 20 carries to lead the defending state champion Sabercats to an 81-48 win over Sunrise Mountain High.

Claire Hammen

Loveland, Colo. > Gymnastics

Claire, a sophomore at Loveland High, swept all four events on the first day of the Class 5A championships to win the all-around title with a state-record 39.225 total points. The next day, she won every individual title, scoring 9.75 in vault and bars and 9.9 in floor exercise and balance beam, breaking the beam record (9.85). A junior international elite gymnast, she won the all-around title at the Level 10 Colorado state championships last year to qualify a second time for the Junior Olympics.

Ernesto Bayaua

Houston > Pool

Bayaua, a 35-year-old bartender, won the 18th annual U.S. Amateur Pool championship in Tampa, coming back from a 6-1 deficit in the final to defeat former titleholder Ron Park of Charlotte 11-9. Bayaua was one of just 128 players among 2,177 competitors to qualify for the double-elimination title rounds, where he defeated nine opponents in eight-ball and nine-ball matches in a race-to-seven format to reach the final. Wit his win, he earned a spot at the 2012 U.S. Open Pro championship.

Malia Gonzales

Rio Rancho, N.Mex. > Cross-Country

Malia, a junior at Cleveland High, won the individual state title to lead the Storm to the girls' Class 5A team championship on the 5K course at Rio Rancho High. Malia’s winning time of 19:44.10 topped the girls' runner-up by more than nine seconds.

Luis Martinez

Rio Rancho, N.Mex. > Cross-Country

Luis, a junior at Cleveland High, won the individual state title to lead the Storm to the boys' Class 5A team championship on the 5K course at Rio Rancho High. The defending state titleholder, Luis extended his winning streak to 12 races with a finish of 15:41.40, more than 40 seconds ahead of the next runner.

Bryan Chow

Schenectady, N.Y. > Tennis

Chow, a junior at Williams College, won the NCAA Division II men's doubles title with Trey Meyer at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile. Seeded first, he helped defeat California Lutheran’s Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the final. Chow and Meyer were runners-up in the Super Bowl among the Div.-II, Div.-III, NAIA and JUCO champions. The duo had an 11-1 record in their first season of competition together.

Trey Meyer

New Orleans > Tennis

Meyer, a junior at Williams College, won the NCAA Division II men's doubles title with Bryan Chow at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile. Seeded first, he helped defeat California Lutheran’s Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the final. Meyer and Chow were runners-up in the Super Bowl among the Div.-II, Div.-III, NAIA and JUCO champions. The duo had an 11-1 record in their first season of competition together.
